Professor Jamie Craig Nominated for SA Scientist of the Year, Again!

We are thrilled to announce that Professor Jamie Craig, a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in the care of glaucoma patients at Eyemedics, has been nominated for the prestigious SA Scientist of the Year Award for the second consecutive year. This nomination recognises his exceptional contributions to glaucoma research and his unwavering commitment to improving patient outcomes. In this blog post, we celebrate Professor Craig's nomination by highlighting his groundbreaking work and its profound impact on glaucoma patients worldwide.

Advancing Glaucoma Research

Professor Jamie Craig's innovative research at the Flinders Health and Medical Research Centre has revolutionised the early detection and treatment of glaucoma. His Eye and Vision team achieved a significant milestone by developing the first National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA)-accredited clinical testing for glaucoma and other genes. This pioneering effort has set a new standard in the field, enabling more accurate and early diagnosis of this debilitating disease.

Breakthrough Diagnostic Innovations

One of Professor Craig's most notable achievements is the development of a first-of-its-kind saliva test for glaucoma. This non-invasive diagnostic tool allows for the early identification of individuals at high genetic risk of developing glaucoma, facilitating timely interventions to prevent vision loss.

In addition to the saliva test, Professor Craig has introduced a groundbreaking laser treatment designed to halt the progression of glaucoma in high-risk patients. This innovative approach has transformed the management of glaucoma, offering new hope to countless individuals at risk of losing their sight.

Global Impact and Recognition

The impact of Professor Craig's work extends far beyond Australia. His genetic risk score, now in clinical use across the country, plays a crucial role in identifying those at the highest risk of developing glaucoma, ensuring they receive effective treatment before irreversible vision loss occurs. His Myocilin cascade screening program has been implemented in eight countries, testing over 4,500 individuals and preventing blindness in many cases.

Recently, Professor Craig's contributions were further acknowledged with a $2.9 million MRFF Genomics Health Futures Grant. This grant aims to enhance the triage and monitoring processes for early-stage glaucoma patients, improving care and outcomes on a global scale.

Acknowledging Excellence in Ophthalmology

Professor Craig's nomination for the SA Scientist of the Year Award is a testament to his dedication and the groundbreaking nature of his research. "It’s a privilege to be a finalist again in the SA Scientist of the Year category. This nomination is an acknowledgement of the tireless work our research team is undertaking to improve people’s lives and provides inspiration to continue our pursuit of effectively detecting and treating causes of blindness," says Professor Craig.

At Eyemedics, we are incredibly proud of Professor Jamie Craig and his nomination for the SA Scientist of the Year Award. His pioneering research, innovative diagnostic tools, and global impact make him a true leader in ophthalmology. We congratulate Professor Craig on this well-deserved recognition and look forward to his continued success in advancing glaucoma research and patient care.
